Lady Bucs begin season's final road swing with Gardner-Webb Thursday

Wednesday, March 01, 2006

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (March 1, 2006) - The ETSU women's basketball team begins its final regular season road trip of the year on Thursday, squaring off against Gardner-Webb, tipping off at 7 p.m. in Paul Porter Arena.  The Lady Bucs (17-8, 13-5 A-Sun) are coming off a pair of wins last weekend, while the Runnin' Bulldogs (11-15, 10-9 A-Sun) topped Kennesaw State in overtime, 91-88, on Tuesday night.

About the Game ...

Tonight's game begins the season's final road swing for ETSU, while Gardner-Webb ends its regular season slate.  Both teams have already earned spots in the upcoming A-Sun Tournament, scheduled to start on March 9, in Dothan, Ala.  The Lady Bucs will be vying to avenge the season's earlier setback at the hands of GWU, while the Runnin' Bulldogs are searching for another win in order to guarantee themselves the fourth seed in the championship tournament.

Scouting the Runnin' Bulldogs ...

Bulldogs Sequenta Blackman and Shameka Smith are leading a balanced offensive attack, averaging 10.6 and 10.3 points per game, respectively.  Smith is also the team's, and one of the A-Sun's top rebounders, pulling down 9.1 boards a night.  Candyse Kelly and Laura Povilonyte have also gotten in on the scoring, talllying 9.0, and 7.0 ppg.  Blackman and Povilonyte were the ones to hurt the Lady Bucs the first time around, with Blackman posting 15 points and Povilonyte chipping in with 14.  After rattling off five wins in-a-row midway through the season, GWU hasn't been able to put a pair of wins together, losing six of its last nine.  The Bulldogs picked up a win in their most recent contest, besting Kennesaw State, 91-88 in overtime, in Boiling Springs.

The Series ...

Gardner-Webb overcame a 13-point second half deficit to slip past the Lady Bucs, 72-68, and earn the win in the teams' first-ever meeting on Jan. 21.  Trailing 66-63,  the Bulldogs out-scored ETSU 9-2 in the game's final 2:34 to secure the victory and hand the Lady Bucs their second home loss in the last three tries.
