ETSU women's tennis sweeps Morehead State, Eastern Kentucky

RICHMOND, Ky. (February 17, 2006) - The ETSU women's tennis team brought their winning streak to six on Friday, defeating Morehead State, 7-0 and Eastern Kentucky, 7-0 at the Greg Adams Tennis Center. The Lady Bucs improve to 6-1 on the season, while Morehead State falls to 0-5 and Eastern Kentucky falls to 3-4.
In the first match of the day against Morehead State, Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) and Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) defeated Mariana Weschenfelder and Leah Lobnitz, 8-4 in No. 1 doubles. In the No. 2 position Sandie Knight (Adamstown, Australia) and Masha Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) defeated Laura Ferreira and Fernanda Chiaparini, 8-4 to clinch the doubles point. Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) and Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) defeated Heather Butt and Megan Sammons, 8-1 in the No. 3 slot.
In singles action, sophomore Elena Volobueva defeated Mariana Weschenfelder, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 position, while Masha Ilina defeated Fernanda Chiaparini, 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 2 position. In No. 3 singles, Olya Batsula defeated Laura Ferreira, 6-2, 6-0. Freshman Tara Byrne defeated Heather Butt, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 4 slot, and in the No. 5 position, senior Sandie Knight defeated Leah Lobnitz 6-1, 6-0, while Vita Moskaliova defeated Megan Sammons, 6-0, 6-3 in the No. 6 singles position.
In match two against Eastern Kentucky, the Lady Bucs dominated the Colonels, winning all three doubles sets. Elena Volobueva and Sylwia Ziolkowska defeated Ina Durcakova and Jemma Euers, 8-4 in the No. 1 position while Sandie Knight and Masha Ilina defeated Meredith Giles and Terin Roof, 8-0 in the No. 2 doubles slot. In No. 3 doubles, Olya Batsula and Tara Byrne defeated Kim Underdonk and Lucia Vojtkova, 8-3.
In singles action the Lady Bucs again dominated, winning all six sets. At the No. 1 position Elena Volobueva defeated Meredith Giles, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 while junior Masha Ilina defeated Ina Durcakova, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. Olya Batsula defeated Lucia Vojtkova, 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 3 slot. Senior Sandie Knight defeated Jemma Euers, 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 4 position, while in the No. 5 position Tara Byrne defeated Terin Roof, 6-0, 6-0. In No. 6 singles, Sylwia Ziolkowska defeated Kim Underdonk, 6-0, 6-0.
With the victory in her second match, junior Masha Ilina has become tied for second in all-time victories in ETSU women's tennis history.
"We were very lucky today, it was good to get a win against Morehead State. Against Eastern Kentucky, they're real good at the 1, 2, 3 positions and I'm very happy to win those three matches, we played very tough to do that," said head coach Steve Brooks.
ETSU women's tennis team takes on the University of Maryland-BC, next Friday, February 24, with the action starting at 6 p.m. and next Virginia Tech, February 25 at 11 a.m. in Blacksburg, Va.
