Johnson City, Tenn. (February 24, 2006) - Two stellar starting pitching performances and timely two-out hitting powered the ETSU baseball squad to sweep of visiting Youngstown State Friday afternoon from Cardinal Park by scores of 10-5 and 4-2.

The Bucs (6-5) jumped on Youngstown State early and often in game one, scoring in each of the first three innings to take a 5-0 lead.  Junior Justin Aughey (Davie, Fla.) staked ETSU to a 1-0 first inning lead with a two-out infield single, driving in senior Shane Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) from third base.

Four consecutive two-out hits led to three Buccaneer runs in the second frame for a 4-0 advantage.  Senior Josiah Glafenhein (Knoxville, Tenn.) and junior Michael Courtney (Knoxville, Tenn.) started the rally with back-to-back doubles, and senior Chuck Hargis (Powell, Tenn.) brought Courtney home with a single up the middle.  Byrne followed with a single to score Hargis and give the Bucs a four-run lead.

Junior Stephen Douglas (Kennesaw, Ga.) reached with a one-out single in the third, and extended the lead to five with some aggressive base running. After stealing second base, Douglas swiped third also, and came around to score when catcher Erich Diedrich's throw went into left field.

Leading 5-1 in the seventh, the Bucs pushed five runs across on just one hit, aided by three Penguin errors.  Sophomore Bubba Herbold (Knoxville, Tenn.) delivered the lone base hit in the inning with a bases loaded pinch hit double, scoring two and pushing the lead to 7-1.

Junior Ryan Howe (Spartanburg, S.C.) pitched seven strong innings, picking up his first victory of the season.  He scattered three hits, while striking out seven and surrendering no earned runs to improve to 1-0 on the season, earning his first decision in three starts.  Penguin starter Eric Shaffer took the loss in Youngstown's season opener, pitching five innings and striking out six.

In the day's second game, the Bucs pushed three runs across in the fourth inning, and four Buccaneer hurlers combined on a seven-hitter for the 4-2 victory.

Trailing 1-0 in the fourth, Douglas delivered a one-out single to drive in Byrne from third, and senior Matt Traylor (Knoxville, Tenn.) gave the Bucs the lead with a two-out, two-RBI single.

Sophomore Joey McCown (Alcoa, Tenn.) went 5 2/3 innings, striking out three batters to improve to 2-0 on the season.  Senior Steven Calicutt (Spartanburg, S.C.) worked a perfect ninth inning, saving his third game of 2006.  Lucas Engle took the loss for Youngstown State, going seven innings and striking out six Buccaneers.

The two teams conclude their three-game series Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
