(May 23, 2006) - Reeling from a weekend sweep at the hands of Florida Atlantic, the fifth-seeded ETSU baseball squad now prepares to open its inaugural Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament against the second seed Mercer Bears.  Mercer swept the season series against the Bucs back in April in Johnson City.

The teams will meet for the fourth time this season at 3 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at Stetson's Melching Field in DeLand, Fla.  Fans can follow all the action both via internet broadcast and on WJCW 910 AM on the Mountain States Health Alliance Buccaneer Sports Network with "Voice of the Bucs" Jay Sandos calling all the action.  Fans can also watch every contest via live internet streaming courtesy of the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Seniors Shane Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.), Blake Church (Roswell, Ga.) and Matt Traylor (Knoxville, Tenn.) lead the Bucs' offense into postseason play.  Traylor tops the team with a .372 batting average, and has six doubles, four home runs and 29 RBI in just 34 starts this season.  ETSU's all-time hits leader, Byrne has been the Bucs' most consistent threat throughout the season.  The Johnson City native hits .343 with 14 doubles, four triples, eight home runs and 46 RBI.  He was also named to the All-Conference squad for the second time in his career on Tuesday.  Church claimed the all-time ETSU RBI crown this season, and leads the squad with 11 home runs and 49 RBI.

A pair of Spartanburg, S.C. natives will anchor the pitching staff through the tournament. Junior Ryan Howe has become the Bucs' number one starter since a season-ending injury to senior Jeremy Hall (Gray, Tenn.).  Howe is 5-4 in his first season as a Buc with a 6.01 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 82 1/3 innings pitched.  Senior Steven Calicutt has recorded 10 saves after moving into the closer role in his senior campaign.  In addition to the saves, Calicutt has compiled a 7-5 mark with 45 K's and a 5.72 ERA in 56 2/3 innings.
