Saturday, October 01, 2005

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (October 1, 2005)-  The ETSU women's soccer team got its second win in a row on Saturday against Stetson University, 2-1, at the Liberty Bell Soccer Complex.  Senior Erin Ashton (New Bern, N.C.) scored the game winning goal and assisted on the other goal to give the Buccaneers the victory.  ETSU now stands at 5-6-0, 2-2-0 in the A-Sun.

"Stetson played a good game and they made us battle for it," said head women's soccer coach Heather Henson.  "We need to keep working and push forward from here.  This was a great weekend of soccer for us and it feels great to be sitting 2-2 in the A-Sun now."

With both teams scoreless entering the second period, Ashton found senior Lauren Kulish (Bowie, Md.) off a corner kick at the 56:29 mark to give the Buccaneers the advantage.

Stetson's Jessica Spencer found the back of the net at the 68:55 mark to knot the score at one a piece.  ETSU answered back less than two minutes later when Ashton, off a corner kick, scored the game winning goal for the Buccaneers.

Erin Bilyeu (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) had ten saves for the Buccaneers including a crucial save at the 77:12 mark when Stetson's Kelly Kuenning had the opportunity to tie the game off a penalty kick.

"Erin just saw the ball, she read it well, and it is huge for her to step up in a clutch situation like she did," Henson said.

The Buccaneers will take on Lipscomb at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.
