Thursday, January 26, 2006

DELAND, Fla. (January 26, 2006) - Senior B.J. Banjo (Baltimore, Md.) posted a game-high 26 points, including a career-best six three pointers, as the Lady Bucs battled to a 61-51 victory over Stetson, Thursday night in Edmunds Center.  After shooting a sizzling 51.9 percent from the field (14-for-27) in the first half, the Lady Bucs cooled off in the second period, mustering only five field goals, but still managed the 10-point win.

With the victory, ETSU improves to 12-5, 8-2 in the Atlantic Sun, while Stetson falls to 3-13, 1-8 in conference.

ETSU went from scalding hot to stone cold after the break, failing to net its first field goal of the half until the 13:07 mark when Candace Gibson (Warner Robins, Ga.) converted on a layup.  The Lady Bucs' dry spell saw the Hatters surge to their first lead of the night at 39-38, with 15:34 to go.

The Hatters would hold a total of three leads in the half, before the Lady Bucs pulled away, sinking eight free throws in the last three minutes, including four from sophomore Nichelle Akers (Sumter, S.C.).

ETSU earned an early seven-point lead in the first half, nailing its first four field goal attempts, including two threes from sophomore Michele DeVault (Columbus, Ohio).  The Lady Bucs were on fire from long range all night, draining 9-of-13 attempts for a sensational 69.2 percent performance for the night.  DeVault was a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc for the game, tallying 13 points overall.

Banjo led the ETSU attack in the first, posting 19 points, on a 7-for-13 effort from the field, 5-for-7 from long range.  Stetson's Nefertiti Walker, also one of the league's top scorers, netted 13 in the opening period and a team-high 19 for the game.

The Hatters were also hot from the floor in the first, fielding a 54.2 percent effort (13-for-24). But long-range shooting spelled the difference, as ETSU dropped seven treys to a lone three-pointer from the Hatters.  ETSU led by as many as 12 in the first half, before taking the 36-31 advantage into the locker room.

ETSU also took advantage of Stetson's foul trouble throughout, converting on 14-of-20 attempts at the line, while the Hatters made only seven attempts at the charity stripe.  Stetson held the advantage on the glass, besting ETSU 32-27 on the boards, highlighted by 10 from Mia Johnson.  Banjo paced the Lady Bucs with seven rebounds.

Four Lady Bucs scored in double figures on the night, with Akers and Gibson with 10 apiece, along with Banjo's 26, and DeVault's 13.  Walker was the lone Hatter to reach double digits, with Johnson, Kim Manning, and Janene Maclin adding eight each.

The Lady Bucs will be on the road through the weekend, as they are set to play Mercer on Saturday.  The contest is scheduled for at 2 p.m. start in Macon, Ga.
