Saturday, April 22, 2006
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (April 22, 2006) - Senior James Rainer (Alcoa, Tenn.) continued to run away from the competition, taking top honors in the 100-meter dash, Saturday at the Vanderbilt Invitational. Junior Anna Marie Ricciardi (Canfield, Ohio) and the 4x100-meter team also had outstanding afternoons, both posting season-best marks.
Rainer came out on top of a strong field in the 100, racing to a time of 10.43 seconds to best Middle Tennessee State's Van Fraley, who finished in 10.49. The victory was the fifth individual-event win of the season for Rainer, who has taken the blue ribbon in four 100 competitions. Johnny Tucker (Spartansburg, S.C.) took 12th in the 100 field, running 10.81.
Ricciardi earned a second-place finish in the high jump, setting a season-best mark of 5-8 (1.73m). Memphis' Chen Edri also cleared 5-8, but took home first prize due to less misses.
Rainer, Tucker, along with teammates Michael Wright (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Tyler Woodruff (Sevierville, Tenn.), combined to finish fourth in the 4x100, clocking a season-best time of 40.82. Middle Tennessee State recorded the event victory with a regional-qualifying time of 39.82.
"It was a good day of competition for us," said ETSU associate head coach Michelle Byrne. "We saw some marked improvements, so hopefully that will set us up well for the regional championships."
The Bucs are off until April 30, when they make the short trip to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Knoxville Twilight Meet, hosted by the University of Tennessee.
