RICHMOND, Va. (Sept. 2, 2005) - Junior Brittany Kessel (Libertyville, Ill.) belted a career-high 18 kills as the ETSU volleyball team outlasted UNC Greensboro, 3-2, in its season opener at the VCU Third Degree Sportswear Invitational, Friday in Richmond, Va.

After taking the first game 30-25, the Lady Bucs fell into a 2-1 hole, dropping game two, 30-20, and game three, 30-26.  ETSU stormed back in game four, blasting the Spartans with nine-consecutive points to take a 28-11 lead, before closing out the game, 30-12.  Game five was much the same, as ETSU led by as many as seven points, prior to putting the Spartans away, 15-9, to claim the match as well as its first win of the season.

"I really liked how we pushed through game five," said head coach Lindsey Devine following the victory.  "We struggled with that last season but we fought through it tonight."

Junior Jennifer Sartor (Toronto, Ontario) also had a promising opener, slamming 15 kills on 27 attempts, leading the team with an impressive .444 hitting percentage.  Sophomore Callie Kiselich (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and junior Sarah Buhr (Stockton, Calif.) were strong in the middle, adding 13 and 11 kills, respectively.

Kiselich hit .429 for the contest, while Kessel recorded .361 on an 18-for-36 showing.  Buhr was also solid on defense, posting a match-high 14 digs.  Junior Jennifer Emerson (Tracy, Calif.) led all setters with 41 assists, as Kessel chipped in 18.

"It was a whole team effort," said Devine, stressing the impact of the entire squad.  "Because of our depth, and the way we've been practicing, those who were on the court were really prepared to face the challenges."

Hilary Overby led the Spartans with 16 kills, hitting .389 for the match.  Teammate Lauren Keiser trailed with 14 kills on the night and Adrian Hicks added 37 assists, as UNC Greensboro drops to 0-1 on the season.

ETSU, which now stands at 1-0 on the year, is slated for a pair of matches in Richmond on Saturday, with VCU at 12:30 p.m., followed by Radford at 3:30 p.m.  The VCU contest is scheduled to be broadcast live over the internet at http://vcurams.vcu.edu/volleyballschedule.htm.
