MIAMI, Fla. (November 6, 2005) - The East Tennessee State volleyball team downed Florida International, 32-30, in game one of Sunday's match, but the Panthers would recover with 30-24, 30-27, and 30-21, to defeat the Lady Bucs, 3-1, in Pharmed Arena.  Junior Sarah Buhr (Stockton, Calif.) paced the Lady Bucs with a 16-kill, 11-dig effort, as ETSU drops to 17-13 on the year.  The Golden Panthers improve to 13-12 overall, behind 26 kills from Anita Szymanska.

 

The Lady Bucs trailed for most of the first frame, but battled back from three points down at the 29-26 mark.  Jennifer Sartor (Toronto, Ontario) brought the Lady Bucs within two, with a kill on an assist from Jennifer Emerson (Santa Clara, Calif.).  Sartor tallied 11 kills, along with a match-best 14 digs on the day.

 

A kill by Buhr would bring the Lady Bucs within one, before an attack error by FIU's Laura Vogel allowed ETSU to tie the score at 29.  Another Panther miscue put the Lady Bucs up, 30-29, before a service error by Sartor knotted the score at 30.  A Buhr kill and a service ace by Brittany Kessel (Libertyville, Ill.) put the Lady Bucs ahead for good at 32-30.  Game one was the best hitting output of the day for the Lady Bucs, who hit .244 in the set, while holding FIU to .151.

 

Kessel led ETSU in assists, with 22 sets.  Emerson chipped in with 19 assists of her own, while also contributing 10 digs.

 

The Lady Bucs hit .081 as a team, while the Panthers tallied .180.  Vogel and Mina Spasojevic contributed to the Panther offense with 12 and 11 kills, respectively.  Meanwhile, Whitney Kenney tallied a match-high 57 assists.

The Lady Bucs will hit the road again on Tuesday, November 8, as they take on Western Carolina in the final regular season match of the year.  ETSU then has a break before heading into the Atlantic Sun Tournament, which begins on November 18.
