Lady Bucs tennis tops West Virginia, 5-2

RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 29, 2006) - The ETSU women's tennis team bounced back today, defeating West Virginia University 5-2, after being defeated by No. 20 William & Mary on Saturday. The Buccaneers now improve to 1-1 on the season.

In doubles action, Masha Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) were defeated by Stacey Percival and Raynie Theis, 8-6. In the No. 2 doubles, Tara Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) defeated Natalia Prinz and Colleen Speaker, 9-8 (7-3). West Virginia then captured the doubles point with Ashley Constantine and Monica Lyskawa defeating Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) and Vita Moskaliova (Minsk, Belarus) in a hard fought set, 9-8 (7-5).

The Buccaneers dominated the singles action, winning five of the six sets. In No. 1 singles Masha Ilina defeated Monica Lyskawa, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0. Freshman Tara Byrne defeated Stacey Percival in No. 2 singles. In the No. 3 position, sophomore Elena Volobueva defeated Natalia Prinz, 6-2, 6-2. Junior Sylwia Ziolkowska was defeated at the No. 4 position, after a hard fought battle, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. In No. 5 singles, sophomore Olya Batsula defeated Kelly Walsh, 6-3, 6-0 and in No. 6 singles, senior Sandie Knight (Adamstown, Australia) defeated Ashley Constantine, 6-5, 7-5.

"West Virginia is a very good team, we were very happy to take the win after losing the doubles point, the doubles were really tight right there at the end. It's real good to take five of the six singles matches. I'm really happy with the way we finished up here at William & Mary, we just need to get back on the courts and keep working hard. It's a good way to start our season," said head coach Steve Brooks.

The ETSU women's tennis team will return to action Saturday Feb. 4 against Middle Tennessee State in Murfreesboro and then return home to take on Alabama A&T and conference opponent Kennesaw State on Sunday Feb. 5.
