San Juan, P.R. (February 26, 2006) - The ETSU men's golf squad opened the spring schedule with a first round 292, and sit in 10th place after the first round of the Puerto Rico Classic.
The University of Alabama leads the 18-team field by one stroke over second place Georgia, firing a opening round 280. There is four-way tie four first on the individual leader board with Georgia's Todd Brendon, Florida's Brett Stegmaier, Arizona State's Lenny Park and Texas' Farren Keenan all shooting four-under par 68.
Sophomore Gareth Shaw (Lisburn, Northern Ireland) paced the Bucs with an opening round two-under 70, and is tied for 10th. Freshman Jordan Findlay (Fraserburgh, Scotland) shot even-par and is tied for 25th. 2005 All-American Rhys Davies (Bridgend, Wales) is tied for 38th after firing a first round two-over 74. Freshman Adam Hodkinson (Dore, England) finished round one with a four-over 76, good for a tie for 56th, and sophomore Cian McNamara (Limerick, Ireland) rounded out the scoring effort with a first round seven-over 79 and is tied for 76th.
The tournament continues with second round play tomorrow and concludes with round three on Tuesday, February 28.
