JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 6, 2005) - East Tennessee State University cross country and track and field Head Coach David E. Walker announced today the addition of Michael Deren (Buffalo, N.Y) to the Buccaneer squad for the 2005-06 season.

Deren competed all four years in cross country and track for Frontier High School in Buffalo, N.Y. from 2001-05. Frontier High School is the same high school that produced former ETSU track and field stand out David Haeffner.

Deren has had success at the high school level as he won the 3200 meters in both the indoor and outdoor track seasons to be named the Section 6 Champion in the event. Deren's other accolades include being named as Western N.Y. Runner of the Year, to the All-Western N.Y. team, to the All-ECIC team, and to the Paddock Chevrolet Scholar-Athlete Team.

"Michael will fit into our cross country program almost immediately," stated Walker. "I think he has great potential and we're looking forward to having him on our squad and hopefully making a good contribution in his first year."
