Davidson turns in record-setting performance in 19-1 win over ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 12, 2005) - After being held scoreless in the top of the first, the Davidson offense scored at least one run in each of the next eight innings en route to a 19-1 victory over East Tennessee State in Southern Conference baseball action Thursday afternoon from Cardinal Park in Johnson City, Tenn.

            The Wildcats (24-20, 12-13 SoCon) set a team record with 29 hits in the win while several players set school records as well. By going 4-for-6, third baseman Jay Heafner set the school record for hits in a season (80). Davidson shortstop Eli Benefield hit three doubles in the win, tying a single-game school record as well as setting a season record (21) and a career mark (57). Benefield also tied a single-game school record with five runs scored.

            Davidson opened the scoring with single runs in the top of the second and third innings. Benefield hit his first double of the day with one out in the second, then scored on a single up the middle by Alex Entrekin. Sam Navarro led off the third with a single through the left side and later scored on a single to left by Ronnie Shore.

            East Tennessee State (27-18, 12-15 SoCon) scored its only run in the bottom of the third. Sophomore third baseman Mike Giroud (St. Petersburg, Fla.) led off the frame with a triple off the right field wall. He than crossed the plate on a groundout by senior second baseman Justin Clear (Lafollette, Tenn.).

            The Wildcats scored five runs in the top of the fifth, essentially putting the game away. Entrekin hit an RBI single while Shore and Taylor Shoop each hit two-run homers in the inning.

            Davidson put another run on the board in the fifth as Michael Muniz hit an RBI single to right to score Benefield.

            The Wildcats continued their offensive assault in the final four innings, scoring three runs in the sixth, four in the seventh, three in the eighth and one in the ninth.

            In the sixth, Benefield hit an RBI double and later scored on an error while Entrekin drove in a run with a groundout.

            Shore drove in the first run of the seventh with a single to left and Gregory Zage followed, two batters later, with an RBI single up the middle. With one down, Shoop reached on a fielder's choice with, scoring Zage. Navarro later hit a sacrifice fly to center to bring Benefield from third.

            Shore also drove in the first run of the eighth, scoring Musashe with a single up the middle. Zage brought home Shore with a sacrifice fly and Entrekin later doubled to right-center with one out to score Heafner.

            The Wildcats scored their final run of the game in the top of the ninth on an RBI double to right-center by Alden Crissey.

            In addition to Davidson's tremendous offensive numbers, the Wildcats also received a stellar pitching performance by starter Andy Carter. Carter (5-2) pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out three and walking four.

            ETSU starter Jeremy Hall (Gray, Tenn.) was charged with the loss (9-3), allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits in 3.2 innings of work.

            Each of Davidson's starters had at least two hits in the victory, led by Shore, Heafner, Benefield and Entrekin who each had four. Benefield led the team with his five runs scored while Shore had five RBIs and Entrekin drove in four.

            ETSU junior shortstop Chuck Hargis (Powell, Tenn.) led the Bucs at the plate, going 2-for-3 in the loss.

            The Bucs and Wildcats conclude their three-game SoCon series tomorrow with a Noon doubleheader from Cardinal Park in Johnson City, Tenn.
