SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Jan. 22, 2005) -- East Tennessee State senior forward Tiffani Mayes (Sumter, S.C.) scored 24 points, leading the Lady Bucs to a 91-73 victory over the Wofford Lady Terriers Saturday afternoon from Benjamin Johnson Arena in Spartanburg, S.C.

In the second half, Mayes became the 13th Lady Buc player to score 1,000 points in her career. Angie Fickes was the last ETSU player to reach the mark, also scoring her 1,000th point against Wofford during the 1999-2000 season.

Junior guard B.J. Banjo (Baltimore, Md.) also had a stellar game for the Lady Bucs. Banjo scored 22 points, including a 9-of-9 effort from the foul line, to go with game-high totals of eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals while playing the entire 40 minutes. She also connected on 3-of-6 from three-point range.

Wofford started the contest with an early 10-6 lead which included a pair of baskets from Jenny Weurding and a 3-pointer by Ricaye Harris. However, over the next 10 minutes, to the the 7:14 mark, the Lady Bucs would rally and open an 18-point cushion on the strength of a 29-7 spurt. All three of Banjo's 3-pointers came in the run.

The Terriers turned the tides and closed the half with a 19-11 streak, highlighted by a three-point play by Becky Sasso with 13 seconds left in the opening stanza. ETSU held a 46-36 advantage at the half.

In the second half, Wofford found itself down 14 on a pair of occasions before fighting back to close within six, 58-52, on a pair of LaToya Strong free throws with 11:42 left. Strong finished 6-of-6 from the charity stripe.

The Lady Bucs increased their lead to a game-high 18 points with 1:10 on the clock and cruised to the victory.

Freshman guard Nichelle Akers (Sumter, S.C.) had a career-high 16 points and junior forward Candace Gibson (Warner Robins, Ga.) added 15 for East Tennessee State. Gibson also pulled down seven rebounds for the Lady Bucs.

Brie Bradshaw led the Terriers with 16 points. Keyed by three 3-pointers, sophomore Mary Jo Yee scored 11 points for Wofford.

With the win, the Lady Bucs improve to 8-9 overall and 6-4 in Southern Conference play. Wofford drops to 3-15 overall and 1-10 in the SoCon.

East Tennessee State returns to action on Monday at 5 p.m. as they travel to Furman.
