Richmond, Ky. (Sept. 11, 2004) - In Saturday action at the Nike/Comfort Suites Invitational the Lady Bucs posted their first win of the 2004 season defeating Lipscomb 3-0 (30-22, 30-24, 31-29) behind stellar play from freshman Callie Kiselich (Colorado Springs, Co.) who posted 12 kills for ETSU in the sweep. In their first match of the day, ETSU fell 2-3 in a thrilling five-game match with the University of Evansville (32-30, 1930, 27-30, 32-30, 10-15). Leading the way for the Bucs was Sara Scandiffio (Purcellville, Va.) posting 18 kills while adding seven digs for the morning match. ETSU came out firing during the second match of the day versus the Lady Bisons posting a .231 hitting percentage against the .026 of Lipscomb and taking the first game in quick fashion with a 22-30 win. The rest of the match proved much the same as ETSU easily won behind a dominant offensive effort at the net. In the match, setter Brittany Kessel (Libertyville, Ill.) posted 33 assists, while senior Karen Freeburg (New Castle, Ind.) and Scandiffio posted seven and eight kills respectively. "I am so proud of the way our girls finished this tournament. This is the positive momentum we need to continue our non-conference schedule," head coach Lindsey Devine said. "We worked very well as a team this weekend, and are constantly improving our play. This coming weekend we will face tough competition at the Mortar Board Premier so this win is a great confidence builder for our team." In the win over the Lady Bisons, the Bucs hit a combined .238 for the match, posting three total blocks adding five aces and 44 digs. In morning action, the Evansville Purple Aces managed a 3-2 win over ETSU. Kessel dished a match-high 53 assists in the loss, while Jennifer Sartor (Toronto, Canada) and Kiselich added 13 and 14 kills respectively for the match. The Lady Bucs will return to action Sept. 17th when they travel to the Mortar Board Premier hosted by Purdue University. Over the weekend ETSU will face the Kentucky Wildcats, Central Michigan University as well as host Purdue. Their first match is slated for a 5:00 p.m. start Friday evening against the Wildcats.
