Thursday, September 16, 2004

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 15, 2004) - The ETSU volleyball squad will travel to Purdue University to compete in the Mortar Board Premier tournament this weekend along with host Purdue, Central Michigan University and Kentucky. Friday night action begins as the Lady Bucs face CMU at 5:00 pm. The Chippewas are 2-5 thus far in 2004, with wins over UW-Green Bay and Louisiana-Lafayette. CMU is led by Emily Lovejoy who has posted 147 kills in 27 games in 2004. Continuing action on Saturday, ETSU will face Purdue University, a team who recently fell out of the USA Today/CSTV Top 25 Coaches Poll. The Boilermakers, who are 5-2 on the year, are led by senior Kim McConaha who has posted 120 kills and 30 total blocks from the middle hitter position. For the final match of the weekend, the Lady Bucs will face the powerful Kentucky Wildcats. UK has posted a 6-2 record thus far in 2004, and most recently won the Kentucky Conference Challenge behind the stellar play of Danielle Wallace who tallied 53 kills hitting .400 for the tournament. "We are very excited about our competition this weekend. After our win versus Lipscomb our confidence level is very high," Lady Bucs head volleyball coach Lindsey Devine said. "We have had a great week of practice and have continued to work together as a team preparing for this weekend." The Lady Bucs pull momentum off of their first win of 2004, a 3-0 sweep of Lipscomb at the Nike/Comfort Suites Classic last weekend. ETSU is led by Sara Scandiffio (Purcellville, Va.) who has posted 82 kills (3.28 per game) over her first seven matches of 2004, while setter Brittany Kessel (Libertyville, Ill.) has paced the offensive with 237 assists (9.48 per game), adding seven aces and 45 digs for the Bucs.
