WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Sept. 17, 2004) - The East Tennessee State volleyball squad fell to 1-7 on the year with a 0-3 loss at the hands of the Kentucky Wildcats tonight in opening round action of the Mortar Board Premier (26-30, 21-30, 27-30). Paced by 14 kills from Sarah Spinner, UK improves to 6-2 thus far in 2004 with the victory over the Lady Bucs. ETSU freshman Callie Kiselich (Colorado Springs, Co.) continued her dominate freshman campaign posting a .400 hitting percentage with 11 kills and three block assists for the match.

Although ETSU posted 43 kills behind 34 assists from setter Brittany Kessel (Libertyville, Ill.) the Lady Bucs offensive was never able to overcome the defensive strength the Wildcats posted at the net. UK posted 10.0 total blocks compared to the 9.5 of the Lady Bucs, while both teams struggled with their offensive numbers throughout the match. For both teams, game one proved the best offensive set of the evening. ETSU managed a .361 hitting percentage during game one, among their best performances of the year, while the Wildcats managed to hit just .326.

Karen Freeburg (New Castle, Ind.) posted nine kills for the Lady Bucs adding eight digs, while sophomore Jennifer Sartor (Toronto, Canada) led ETSU with 13 digs and three block assists adding eight kills for the night. UK had the upperhand from the service stripe posting six aces compared to zero posted by ETSU.
