SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Oct. 24, 2004) - After falling in the first two games of the match the Lady Bucs volleyball squad battled the Wofford Terriers today to a five-game bout losing 16-18 in the deciding fifth game. The Terrier volleyball squad fought through adversity and held on for a 3-2 victory Sunday afternoon versus East Tennessee State in the Benjamin Johnson Arena. The Terriers won the match by scores of 30-25, 30-26, 24-30, 28-30 and 18-16.

Leading the Lady Bucs was Sara Scandiffio (Purcellville, Va.) with 23 kills and 47 total attacks for a match-high .447 hitting percentage. Jennifer Sartor (Toronto, Canada) also contributed 20 kills and 40 total attacks offensively and Karen Freeburg (New Castle, Ind.) notched 20 digs defensively. ETSU garnered 62 assists from Brittany Kessel (Libertyville, Ill.) who also posted 13 digs and one block assist for the afternoon.

 

Senior Andrea Duke registered match-highs of 25 kills, 59 total attacks, five service aces and 30.5 points to lead the Wofford effort. She also posted team highs of .271 hitting percentage and 17 digs in the match.

 

Also contributing on the offensive end was sophomore Christal Carey with 17 kills and 45 total attacks while senior Katie Laser chipped in with 18 kills and 45 total attacks.

 

Six different players registered double-digit dig totals for the Terriers, led by Duke's 17. Carey (16), junior Rhea DeJesus and sophomore Shana Glenn with 14, freshman Simons Swanson with 12 and Laser (11) each attained the plateau. DeJesus led all players with 66 assists.

 

Wofford improves its record to 8-15 overall and 4-5 in the Southern Conference while the Lady Bucs fall to 4-17 overall and 3-8 in league action.

 

ETSU will hit the road facing Western Carolina on Oct. 26 UNC Asheville on Oct. 28 and Georgia State on Oct. 31 in Atlanta.  Game times are set for7:00 pm,  6:00 pm and 2:00 pm respectively.  As always, visit www.ETSUBucs.com for game stories and results.
