GREENSBORO, N.C. (Feb. 27, 2005) - The Buccaneer women's tennis team defeated the UNC Greensboro Spartans 5-2 in their third match of the weekend on Sunday afternoon in Greensboro, N.C. ETSU extends it's winning streak to eight games with the win and is currently 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the SoCon, while UNCG is 2-4 and 0-1.

"It feels good to be 2-0 in the SoCon. I'm proud of my girls because UNCG is a spunky team, who gives 100 percent all of the time and it was a tough match mentally for them," said head coach Steve Brooks.

ETSU took the doubles point with an 8-4 win at No. 3 from Olya Batsula (Minsk, Belarus) and Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and an 8-5 win at No. 1 from Masha Ilina (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland). With the doubles point claimed by the Bucs action at No. 2 continued. In the end, Buccaneers Sandie Knight (Adamstown, Australia) and Elena Volobueva (Barcelona, Spain) would win the match 8-4.

In singles competition ETSU would make the score 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win by Halim at No. 6 over UNCG's Sophie Rychlik. Halim's win gives her a total of 51 career singles wins and places her just one win away from breaking into the ETSU all-time career singles wins top-ten list. The Spartan's Lisa Suggs would then pick up a point in at No. 1 over Volobueva 6-1,6-0. However, the Bucs Ilina at No. 2 and Batsula at No. 5 would pick up the next two points clinching the Buccaneer victory at 4-1. Singles play continued and Ziolkowska would battle to win her match at No. 3 6-3, 4-6 (10-6), but Knight would fall at No. 4 for the 5-2 final match score.

"It was tough, but good for us to play three in a row this early in the season," commented Brooks. "These matches let us know where we are physically and mentally and let us know what we need to work on."

ETSU now takes a short rest before returning to SoCon action this Friday when the Bucs will travel to face the College of Charleston at 2:00 p.m.
