Saturday, January 22, 2005

RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 22, 2004) - The East Tennessee State University men's tennis team, currently No. 72 in the ITA rankings, opened its 2005 spring schedule with a win against Campbell 3-2 on the first day of the annual VCU 4-1 Invitational at the Thalhimer Tennis Center. However, they would lose their second match of the day to American University, 4-1.

The Buccaneers took a 3-2 victory over Campbell, with singles wins from newcomers Lisandro Picardo (Mar del Plata) and Luis Sebastian Serrano (Bucaramanga, Colombia). ETSU seniors Federico Ochoa (Manizales, Columbia) and Moises Serrano (Bucaramanga, Colombia) secured the win with a hard fought 7-6, 4-6, 6-7 (5) for the doubles point.

In the second match, Luis Sebastian Serrano took a win with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Mark Doumba. Felix Insaurralde (Asunción, Paraguay) and Picardo both fought hard taking their singles matches to third sets, but were unable to secure the points for ETSU.

The match scheduled for ETSU against East Carolina on Sunday morning has cancelled due to inclement weather. However, the Buccaneers are expected to return to action at the VCU 4-1 Invitational Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. when they face Norfolk State.
