JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (August 22, 2003) - East Tennessee State women's soccer team defeated VMI 4-1 in a preseason scrimmage Friday night. The scrimmage was played at Civitan Park in Johnson City, Tenn. and consisted of three thirty-minute periods. ETSU freshman Emily Fulcher (New Bern, N.C.) lit up the scoreboard at 17:57 of the first period. Fulcher placed her shot in the top right corner of the Keydets' net for the goal. In the second stanza, sophomore Erin Ashton (New Bern, N.C.) began her barrage of goals. In the 52nd minute of play, Alana Retseck (Soddy Daisy, Tenn.) cross the ball in front of VMI's net to Ashton. Ashton made a slide kick in front of the net and put the ball past VMI keeper Haley Gross for the game-winning goal. Ashton scored early on in the third period with an unassisted goal shot from the top of the eighteen for a 3-0 score. The Keydets answered three minutes later with their lone goal of the game. Jordan Reed passed the ball up to Raevon Pulliam in front of the net for the kick in. Ashton then scored the fourth and final goal of the game off of a penalty kick in the 72nd minute of play. ETSU's defense held VMI to only four shots in the game, while ETSU made 14 shots. "Our team did a great job today and came out with good intensity," commented head coach Heather Henson. "The field conditions created battles on both sides of play," said Henson. "Our defense did a great job and put us into attacking positions. JoAnne Lott (Simpsonville, S.C.), one of our freshman backs, stepped up for us today by winning air balls and getting stuck in those battles. She did a great job of preventing forwards from getting in." The Buccaneers will kick off their season when they travel to Clarksville,Tenn. to partake in the Lady Gov Classic. The Buccaneers will match up against Lipscomb on Aug. 29th at 5:00 p.m. C.S.T. and against Austin Peay on Aug. 31st at 2:00 p.m. C.S.T.
