Johnson City, Tenn. (Sept. 3, 2003) - East Tennessee State head women's basketball coach Karen Kemp announced Wednesday the hiring of former University of Mississippi assistant Kim Dowell as the third and final assistant to join the Lady Bucs coaching staff. Dowell assumed a variety duties with the Ole Miss women?s basketball program which included coaching the post players, overseeing all academics, and assisting in recruiting. She was directly responsible for maintaining the Lady Rebel class schedules, administering study hall, and monitoring the tutoring program. "Kim brings a broad range of experience coming from a Southeastern Conference school," said Kemp. "It was our goal to bring in somebody with a strong recruiting background, so we could go out and get the quality student-athletes we need to be successful." Prior to her two-year stint with Ole Miss, Dowell spent five years as an assistant coach at her alma mater -- the University of Texas at Arlington -- where she also oversaw the academic development. Her other responsibilities at UTA consisted of on-court coaching duties, coordinating film exchange, organizing team travel, and recruiting. Before coaching at Texas-Arlington, Dowell was a four-year starter for the Mavericks and was named the team?s Defensive Player of the Year all four years. She ended her career as one of the most prolific rebounders in school history, finishing with a total of 622 rebounds, which was second on the all-time list at UTA. In addition to playing basketball at UTA, Dowell also served on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee from 1994-96. "Kim has a great personality, and she will fit in great with our staff and the entire ETSU community," added Kemp. Dowell, a native of Avinger, Texas, graduated from Texas-Arlington in 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Exercise and Sport Studies. She is the daughter of Willie and Louisa Dowell.
