Davidson too much to handle as Lady Bucs fall 74-59

Saturday, January 10, 2004

DAVIDSON, N.C. (Jan. 10, 2004) -- Supporting roles were minimal Saturday as East Tennssee State (5-8, 5-3 SoCon) dropped a 74-59 decision at Davidson (7-6, 4-2 SoCon). The Wildcat's bench outscored ETSU's 32-6 in the loss, while Kiya Verdell (Hartwell, Ga.) led the Lady Bucs with a game-high 20 points, followed by Tiffani Mayes (Sumter, S.C.), who netted 18. Despite spectacular performances from Verdell and Mayes, the rest of the Buccaneer offense was silent. Down by six points at the half, ETSU was able to tie the game at 31-31 three minutes into the second half on a three-point basket from B.J. Banjo (Baltimore, Md.). However, the Wildcats proceeded to go on a 19-4 run and never looked back. Emily Callahan and Ashley Hallsted each scored 12 points to lead Davidson, while freshman Katie Hamilton added 11. Davidson shot 54.5 percent from the floor in the second half, including 4-of-9 from the perimeter and finished the game shooting just under 50.0 percent. Meanwhile, the Lady Bucs struggled with a 36.5 percent shooting effort. East Tennessee State, which has lost its last nine games on the road dating back to last season, will travel to Western Carolina on Monday. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
