Three Lady Bucs Earn SoCon Honors

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Mar. 1, 2004) - East Tennessee State's Tiffani Mayes (Sumter, S.C.) and Kiya Verdell (Hartwell, Ga.) were selected to the All-Southern Conference First Team and Brooke Wilhoit (Sevierville, Tenn.) was selected to the 2004 Southern Conference All-Freshman Team, respectively as voted on by the league's coaches. Mayes, a 6-foot-2 center, finished the regular season second in the SoCon in scoring average (15.8 ppg.) and was the league's leading rebounder at 9.2 boards per game, marking the eighth time an ETSU player has led the SoCon in rebounding average. The junior netted a career-high 24 points in a Dec. 20 win over Wofford and tied that mark later in the season at UNC Greensboro on Feb. 21. She was the team's leading scorer 15 times in 26 regular season games and scored over 20 points in a game on seven different occasions. On Jan. 26, Mayes recorded 19 rebounds in a game against Furman. Nineteen rebounds were the most by an ETSU player in over 10 years and was the single highest total in the Southern Conference this season. Her 410 points thus far had nearly doubled her career total prior to this season, and she also posted career-best numbers in assists (42) and steals (40). In addition, Mayes finished the regular season fifth in the conference in field goal percentage (50.9%), 10th in block shots (0.65 bpg.), and 14th in steals (1.54 spg.). Twice Mayes was named SoCon Player of the Week (Dec. 23 and Jan. 27) and helped lead the Lady Bucs to a school record 13 conference vicotories. She recorded a team-best six double doubles. Verdell, a 5-9 guard, finished the regular season second in the SoCon in steals per game (2.54). On Jan. 10, Verdell netted 20 points at Davidson, on top of 3-of-5 shooting from the perimeter, followed by a season-high 22 points at Western Carolina. She recorded a season-high 27 points vs. Furman on Jan.26. In addition, Verdell is second on the team in scoring (13.0 ppg) and tied for second in blocked shots (17). Verdell is also third on the team in rebounding average (4.4 rpg). Wilhoit, a 5-foot-8 guard, was one of two Lady Bucs to start all 26 regular season games this season and led ETSU in minutes per game (34.0). Wilhoit finished fourth in the SoCon in assists per game (3.92). She averaged 6.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per outing, while her 49 steals was second on the team. Wilhoit scored a career-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting including four 3-pointers versus Davidson on Feb. 7 and garnered nine rebounds in a win at College of Charleston on Feb. 2, giving ETSU a season sweep over the Cougars. On the defensive end, Wilhoit has come up with four steals in a game on five separate occasions. East Tennessee State is the No. 4 seed at this year's Southern Confernence Women's Basketball Championships and will take on No. 5 Elon at 11 a.m. Thursday, Mar. 4 at McAlister Fieldhouse in Charleston, S.C.
