CHARLESTON, S.C. (Mar. 1, 2004) - East Tennessee State's Tiffani Mayes (Sumter, S.C.) and Kiya Verdell (Hartwell, Ga.) were selected to the All-Southern Conference First Team and Brooke Wilhoit (Sevierville, Tenn.) was selected to the 2004 Southern Conference All-Freshman Team, respectively as voted on by the league's coaches. Mayes, a 6-foot-2 center, finished the regular season second in the SoCon in scoring average (15.8 ppg.) and was the league's leading rebounder at 9.2 boards per game, marking the eighth time an ETSU player has led the SoCon in rebounding average. On Jan. 26, Mayes recorded 19 rebounds in a game against Furman. Twice Mayes was named SoCon Player of the Week (Dec. 23 and Jan. 27) and helped lead the Lady Bucs to a school record 13 conference vicotories. She recorded a team-best six double doubles. Verdell, a 5-9 guard, finished the regular season second in the SoCon in steals per game (2.54). On Jan. 10, Verdell netted 20 points at Davidson, on top of 3-of-5 shooting from the perimeter, followed by a season-high 22 points at Western Carolina. She recorded a season-high 27 points vs. Furman on Jan.26. In addition, Verdell is second on the team in scoring (13.0 ppg) and tied for second in blocked shots (17). Verdell is also third on the team in rebounding average (4.4 rpg). Wilhoit finished fourth in the SoCon in assists per game (3.92). She averaged 6.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per outing, while her 49 steals was second on the team. Wilhoit scored a career-high 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting including four 3-pointers versus Davidson on Feb. 7 and garnered nine rebounds in a win at College of Charleston on Feb. 2, giving ETSU a season sweep over the Cougars. On the defensive end, Wilhoit has come up with four steals in a game on five separate occasions.
