Rainer and Vernon Advance to Finals, ETSU Competes in Day One of Virginia Tech Challenge

Blacksburg, Va. (Feb. 13, 2004) - The East Tennessee State University track and field team's sprinters continued their success in the 60-meter dash Friday night at the Virginia Tech Challenge. Sophomore James Rainer (Alcoa, Tenn.) and Chantelle Vernon (Markham, Ontario) qualified for the finals in the 60 meters to be held tomorrow. Rainer, who received the SoCon athlete of the week award for his performance in the 60 meters last weekend at the Carolina Classic, finished with a time of 6.92 in the preliminaries to advance to the semifinals. In the semifinals, he then went on to record a time of 6.86 and placed seventh to advance. Vernon qualified to the semifinals with a sixth place finish in the prelims with 7.62. She went on to tie the ETSU school record (7.56) and placed fifth to advance to the finals. "Both James and Chantelle ran well and ran a technically sound race today and I hope that continues into the finals tomorrow," stated assistant coach Michelle Byrne. Senior David Haefner (Hamburg, N.Y.) also had a strong performance as he won the 1000 meter run with a time of 2:29.52. In the 5000 meter run, Buccaneer sophomore Christine Ward (Candler, N.C.) finished well with her time of 19:05.30. "Overall, our athletes are performing well and I am extremely proud," commented Byrne. ETSU will continue action at the Virginia Tech Challenge on Saturday.
