JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 20, 2003) - East Tennessee State's women's tennis team had a strong showing in the 2003 ETSU Tournament placing in the finals in seven of eight flights and winning five. Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland), Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.), and Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.) won in singles competition for each of their respective flights. ETSU swept the doubles brackets with Ziolkowska and Aimee Villavicencio (Lexington, Ky.) and Mariya Ilyina (Kyiv, Ukraine) and Courtney McInnis (Waterboro, Maine) winning the championship games in each of their flights. "Overall I'm happy with the results," stated head coach Steve Brooks. "We still have a lot of work to do, but this is a good start to show us where we need to go." Women's tennis will continue their fall tournament action next week when they travel to Blacksburg, Va. to participate in the Virginia Tech Tournament.
