ETSU Women's Tennis Falls to Davidson, 6-1

JOHNSON, Tenn. (Mar. 27, 2004) - East Tennessee State's women's tennis team fell to the Davidson Wildcats 6-1 Saturday afternoon at the ETSU Tennis Center. The Buccaneers' record drops to 11-8 overall, 2-2 in the SoCon, while the Wildcats record improves to 11-7, 3-1. Davidson began the match by picking up the doubles point. The Bucs' Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) and Mariya Ilyina (Kyiv, Ukraine) played in the No. 1 slot and were overpowered by Kelly Fillnow and Meghan Fillnow with a score of 8-0. At No. 2, Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) battled to an 8-6 loss against Meggie Patterson and Lindsey Powell. Courtney McInnis (Waterboro, Maine) and Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.) were defeated in the No. 3 position 8-1 in their match up against Davidson's Katherine Hatch and Sarah Borkowski. In singles play, the Bucs lone victory came at the No. 4 position from Irey. "Davidson was second in the SoCon last year and has entered this season with essentially the same team," said head coach Steve Brooks. "We had our chances but we just didn't finish the point, and Davidson is a team we need to finish the points with."
