ETSU Men's Tennis Defeats Elon, 6-1

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Mar. 7, 2004) - The East Tennessee State men's tennis team defeated Southern Conference opponent Elon at home in Johnson City, Tenn. in a 6-1 decision on Saturday. The Bucs improve to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in the SoCon, while the Phoenix drop to 1-3, 1-1. In doubles action, the Bucs' by Oscar Posada (Valencia, Venezuela) and Alejandro Salazar (Arequipa, Peru) (8-2) paired up in the No. 1 slot defeating Elon's Pramote Malasitt and Austin Fenn 8-5. At the No. 2 spot, Diego Iglesias (Mar del Plata, Argentina) and Moises Serrano (Bucaramanga, Columbia) easily triumphed over Justin Roberson and Thomas Rohof in a 8-1 final. Cleaning up for the Bucs at No. 3 was the pairing of Fernando Fiuri (Villa Maria, Argentina) and Felix Insaurralde (Asuncion, Paraguay), who defeated Eric Haase and Sebastian Bredbreg in a 9-8 battle. The Bucs carried their success onto singles action with wins from Salazar (6-3, 5-7, 6-0) at No. 1, Posada (6-4, 6-3) at No. 2, Iglesias (2-6, Fiuri (3-6, 6-1, 6-0) at No. 4, Serrano (7-6, 6-4) at No. 5, and Insaurralde (6-4, 6-0) at No. 6. Elon's sole victory came in singles from Rohof in the No. 3 slot (2-6, 7-5, 7-6). ETSU will return to action next weekend to host Tenn. Tech on March 14 at 1:30 p.m. Up next for Elon is a match against Eastern Carolina on March 9 in Greenville, N.C. the match is set for 2:00 p.m. ETSU 6, ELON 1 Singles 1.
