Buccaneer Baseball signs High School All-American

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (July 14, 2003) - East Tennessee State baseball coach Tony Skole announced Monday that Matt Haynes (Cumberland, Ky.), a 2003 Collegiate Baseball First Team High School All-American, has committed to play for the Bucs beginning in the 2004 season. Haynes batted .574 with four home runs and 24 RBI last season as an outfielder for Cumberland High School. He also added eight doubles, two triples and 10 stolen bases. An excellent all-around athlete, Haynes earned 12 varsity letters in high school, playing baseball, basketball and football. Haynes was an Associated Press honorable mention all-state wide receiver following his senior season of football for the Redskins. "We are extremely fortunate to have Matt Haynes coming to East Tennessee State to play baseball," said coach Skole. "Matt is one of the top all-around athletes in the entire state of Kentucky. He has had a very accomplished high school career and was considered one of the top outfield prospects in all of the country. Matt has tremendous athleticism and it will be fun to watch him develop as he concentrates all of his efforts in baseball." Haynes is the second baseball player from Cumberland High School to attend ETSU in recent memory. Former Buccaneer infielder Jeremy Terry attended the same high school before committing to East Tennessee State. Terry had a very successful three seasons (2000-02) in Johnson City, batting .277 for his career. He is the school record holder in career at-bats (621) and is third on the career lists in stolen bases (35) and games played (157).
