JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 4, 2003) - East Tennessee State rising senior pitcher Tim Turner (Marietta, Ga.) threw a no-hitter Saturday night as the Wilmington Sharks defeated the Florence Redwolves, 4-0, in a Coastal Plain League game from Legion Field in Florence, S.C. Turner went the full seven innings, facing just two over the minimum, allowing just two walks and striking out five opposing batters. Turner is in the midst of his second consecutive stellar season in the Coastal Plain League. With Saturday's win, he is 4-3 on the season with a 2.39 ERA. He has pitched three complete games and has struck out 53 batters in 60 innings and held the opposition to a .219 batting average. Last season, Turner was voted as one of the league's top prospects after finishing the year with a 3-4 record and a 1.89 ERA for the Wilson Tobs. He led the league in strikeouts, fanning 95 in just 66.1 innings on the mound, threw two complete games and held opposing hitters to a .186 average. The Coastal Plain League is a summer college baseball league that began play in 1997. Providing top-notch instruction and playing conditions, the CPL offers a premier developmental environment for college players hoping to hone their skills and display their talents during the summer. Playing exclusively in the Carolinas and Virginia, the league utilizes several former minor league stadiums as well as first-class municipal facilities in the following cities: Asheboro, N.C., Durham, N.C., Edenton, N.C., Fayetteville, N.C., Florence, S.C., Hampton, Va., Manteo, N.C., Petersburg, Va., Thomasville, N.C., Wilmington, N.C. and Wilson, N.C.
