CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (April 17, 2004) - The Lady Bucs softball squad (22-26, 3-8 SoCon) suffered 2-1 and 3-1 setbacks in conference action versus Chattanooga today. UTC pitchers Lacey Swarthout and Brittney Whittier, who tossed back-to-back complete games, led the Lady Mocs as Chattanooga used timely hitting to extended its winning streak to 11. Swarthout (20-15) won her fifth straight decision by scattering seven hits with eight strikeouts and just one walk. Whittier (14-2) got her eighth consecutive win by fanning three and walking three with five hits. Chattanooga's overall winning streak ties for the fifth longest in school history and gave the Lady Mocs a 35-20 season mark and 10-1 SoCon slate. Bryn Favor went 2-for-3 with a double and scored both runs in the opening game. Barron pushed Favor home on a bases-loaded walk in the third. Ramirez delivered a two-out, RBI single in the fifth, which extended her hitting streak to eight. ETSU posted one run in the sixth on Janine Sprague's solo home run, her fourth of the 2004 season. The Bucs had the tying run at third in the seventh, but Swarthout wiggled out of trouble. ETSU managed seven hits, leaving seven on base in the 1-2 loss. UTC grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second game after Amanda Hoiness (2-for-2) stroked a run-scoring single, which plated Barron. The Lady Mocs added two more in the fourth on Stefani Thomas' two-run single, which brought home Robyn Johnson and Grace Pickett. The Bucs scored in the sixth on Mary Beth Hazelwood's RBI single and they left the bases loaded as Whittier pitched around a UTC error. The Bucs stranded 17 runners on the day and UTC stranded 16. Leading the way offensively for the Bucs was Sprague who posted two hits on the day adding one RBI, while Hazelwood tallied one hit and one RBI for the afternoon. The teams play the final game of the series Sunday at Frost Stadium at 2 p.m.
