JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 6, 2004) - East Tennessee State senior shortstop Andy Howdeshell (Maryville, Tenn.) and sophomore left-handed pitcher/outfielder Steven Calicutt (Spartanburg, S.C.) were named to the preseason All-Southern Conference baseball team, released Wednesday in Spartanburg, S.C. Howdeshell was voted as the first-team shortstop after turning in a stellar season for the Bucs in 2003. Andy finished sixth in the SoCon in batting average (.354), seventh in hits (74), fifth in home runs (10) and slugging percentage (.593) and fourth in total bases (124) and hit by pitch (11). He led the team in those categories as well, but also led ETSU in runs scored (40), doubles (14), triples (3), RBIs (33) and on-base percentage (.435). Andy had a 15-game hitting streak from Mar. 2-Apr. 2, and had a streak of seven games (Apr. 26-May 6) where he had at least two base hits in each game. He was named the first-team All-SoCon shortstop following the season. Calicutt was selected as the second-team All-SoCon designated hitter after finishing second on the Bucs with a .314 batting average last season. He also scored 20 runs, hit two doubles, belted two home runs and drove in 12 runs in 2003. Calicutt was also a starting pitcher for the Bucs last season, going 3-6 with a 6.66 ERA. He earned a win in his first collegiate appearance against Xavier, going 5.1 innings while allowing just one hit and was also dominant in his first Southern Conference start, pitching a complete-game shutout against VMI. Howdeshell and senior left-handed pitcher/outfielder Tim Turner (Marietta, Ga.) also recently received accolades from Baseball America. Both players were singled out as "players to watch" in the conference while Howdeshell was named first-team all-conference by the publication. Turner was named as the best defensive outfielder in the SoCon and as having the best outfield arm. Turner was also listed as one of the significant two-way players in the conference and as one of the SoCon's best professional baseball prospects. The Bucs open their season next weekend (Feb. 13-15) with a three-game series at South Florida in Tampa, Fla.
