TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 12, 2004) -- The East Tennessee State baseball team begins their 2004 campaign with game one of a three game series at South Florida from Red McEwen Field in Tampa, Fla. Friday night at 7 p.m. Live stats will be available for the series by visiting the USF Athletics website or www.gobulls.usf.edu. Game two of the three-game set will be Saturday at 1 p.m. and game three will take place Sunday, also at 1 p.m. The Buccaneers had a 15-36 record in 2003 and finished ninth in the Southern Conference with a 9-20 record. ETSU returns eight starters and eight pitchers from last season, but head coach Tony Skole and his staff also added a very talented recruiting class to this season's roster. Leading this season's squad will be senior shortstop Andy Howdeshell (Maryville, Tenn.), senior left-handed pitcher/outfielder Tim Turner (Marietta, Ga.) and senior left-handed pitcher Josh Kite (Greeneville, Tenn.). Howdeshell is the preseason All-Southern Conference shortstop after leading the Bucs in 11 offensive categories last season. Turner is one of the most exciting players in the nation, as he is a good hitter and pitcher, but adds a third dimension as a terrific defensive centerfielder. Kite is a key member of the Buccaneer pitching staff, as he has overpowering stuff and can make appearances as a starter or out of the bullpen. Sophomore Steven Calicutt (Spartanburg, S.C.) is also an All-SoCon preseason selection at designated hitter, but will likely see time at several positions this season. Calicutt will be one of the Bucs' top starting pitchers this season, but he also played all three outfield positions, first base and designated hitter in 2003.
