JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 22, 2004) - The East Tennessee State baseball team won both ends of a doubleheader against Xavier Sunday afternoon from Cardinal Park in Johnson City, Tenn. for the second consecutive day, as the Bucs completed a four-game sweep of the Musketeers. The Bucs took game one 4-3 before winning game two 10-6. With the wins, East Tennessee State raises its record to 4-5 while Xavier falls to 0-4 on the early season. East Tennessee State got on the board first in game one, scoring two unconventional runs in the bottom of the second. Sophomore second baseman Josiah Glafenhein (Knoxville, Tenn.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, followed by a single by junior catcher Caleb Moore (Knoxville, Tenn.). The two baserunners advanced to second and third on an error during Moore's base hit. Glafenhein then scored the first run of the game and Moore moved to third on a wild pitch. Another wild pitch during the same at bat allowed Moore to score the second run of the afternoon. The Bucs doubled their lead, taking a 4-0 advantage with two runs in the bottom of the third. With two outs, the same two Buccaneers started a rally as Glafenhein walked and Moore followed with a two-run homer over the left field wall. The blast was Moore's second home run in as many days as he hit a solo shot in Saturday's second game against the Musketeers. Xavier came back in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs to cut the Buccaneer lead in half. Center fielder Jay Johnson walked with one out, followed by a walk by shortstop Brett Smith. The two baserunners would score on a two-out double to right-center by left fielder Drew Roberts. The Musketeers trimmed another run off the Buccaneer lead in the top of the sixth, but that was as close as they could get. With two down in the inning, first baseman Matt Lucas doubled to right-center then scored on a single by Smith. ETSU senior lefty Tim Turner (Marietta, Ga.) (1-1) had a solid outing, pitching a complete game while allowing three runs on four hits and striking out five. Xavier starter Dan Graham (0-1) also pitched well, but was charged with the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in six innings. Graham also walked five and struck out seven. Moore led the Bucs in game one, going 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBIs. Lucas paced the Musketeers with two hits while Roberts had two RBIs. In game two, East Tennessee State again got on the board quickly, taking the lead with two runs in the bottom of the first. With one out, sophomore right fielder Shane Byrne (Johnson City, Tenn.) walked, then advanced to third on a double by senior shortstop Andy Howdeshell (Maryville, Tenn.). Sophomore first baseman Blake Church (Roswell, Ga.) then stepped to the plate and hit a single up the middle to score both Byrne and Howdeshell. Xavier scored a run in the top of the second to cut the Buccaneer lead to 2-1. Roberts walked to lead off the inning then moved to second as Smith reached on an error. After advancing to third on a fielder's choice, Roberts stole home after left fielder Alec Moss stole second. The Bucs seemingly broke the game wide open in the bottom of the second, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring five runs. ETSU loaded the bases to start the inning as Moore was hit by a pitch, Turner walked and freshman catcher John Weddle (Knoxville Tenn.) reached on a fielder's choice. After an out was recorded, sophomore left fielder Matt Traylor (Knoxville, Tenn.) singled to score Moore and Turner, while Weddle scored on an errant throw on the play. Traylor would score as Byrne tripled to right-center, and Byrne then came home on an RBI groundout by Howdeshell. The Musketeers immediately responded with five runs of their own, making the score 7-6 in favor of the Bucs. Second baseman Matt Waskerwitz led off the frame with a double to right field. Xavier loaded the bases as catcher Jordan Wolf walked and right fielder Steve Sakosits hit an infield single. Johnson then walked to force in a run, followed by a grand slam homer by Roberts. The Buccaneer pitching staff then settled down as freshman starter Caleb Glafenhein (Knoxville, Tenn.) and relievers Moore, Josh Kite (Greeneville, Tenn.) and Trevor Smith (Newport, Tenn.) allowed just one hit from the third inning on. The Buccaneer offense was not through however, as ETSU scored three runs in the final two innings to ice the game. In the fifth, freshman pinch-hitter Stephen Douglas (Kennesaw, Ga.) hit a clutch two-out single to score Turner. In the sixth, Church capped a tremendous series with a two-run homer over the left field wall. Caleb Glafenhein (1-0) earned his first collegiate win after pitching five innings and allowing six runs (five earned) on four hits. Glafenhein also walked four and struck out four in the victory. Lucas (0-1) was charged with the loss after allowing seven runs on five hits in 1.2 innings pitched. Church was 2-for-3 with a run scored and four RBIs for ETSU while Byrne went 2-for-2 with three runs scored and an RBI. Xavier was led by Roberts, who was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and four RBIs. "What enabled us to win today was good pitching, solid defense and some timely hitting," commented ETSU head coach Tony Skole following today's doubleheader. "I am happy about the way we came out today and played aggressively. Tim (Turner) was very sharp on the mound and (Blake) Church and (Caleb) Moore did a good job driving in runs to catapult our offense." The Bucs return to action on Friday afternoon for the opener of a three-game weekend series against Central Michigan. First pitch from Cardinal Park in Johnson City, Tenn. is set for 3 p.m.
