JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (July 2, 2003) - East Tennessee State University men's basketball coach Murry Bartow announced Wednesday that University of Maine assistant coach Will Bailey has accepted a position on the Buccaneer coaching staff. "Will Bailey is going to be a great addition to our staff," Bartow said. "I know Will very well because I coached him and have worked beside him as a coach. I think he will be a great fit for what we were looking for here at ETSU. We wanted someone who would not only be good with the players on the floor, but also a solid recruiter." Bailey, a native of Chicago, Ill., played for Bartow while at Alabama-Birmingham from 1995-97 and served as team captain of the 1996-97 squad that reached the NIT. He was selected the team's best defensive player in 1997, and was UAB's representative to the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. Beginning his coaching career in 1997-98, Bailey served as a student assistant at UAB, helping guide the Blazers to the 1998 NIT. He then served as a graduate assistant at UAB from 1999-2001, assisting a team that made the 1999 NCAA Tournament before moving on to Chicago State in 2001-02. Last season, Bailey was an assistant coach for Maine, with duties that included recruiting, on-floor instruction, scheduling and pre-game preparation. "It's important to stress just how much Will brings to our team," Bartow said. "He's an excellent floor coach who knows a great deal about the perimeter game. He's from the Chicago area and will help us enormously when it comes to recruiting. He's just a well-rounded coach with a lot of talent." Bailey said he is excited about being in Johnson City. "This is a great opportunity to work for Coach Bartow, especially after having played and coached with him before at UAB," said Bailey, who will receive his master's degree in health and physical education this summer. "I think I'm coming into a good situation with a great team that's been successful, and I'm thankful for the chance to coach at ETSU." Bailey and fellow assistant Scott Wagers, who has been at ETSU for three seasons, will join Bartow on the Buc bench this season. The team still has one assistant position still vacant.
