Buccaneer Baseball signs McCay Green to National Letter of Intent

Thursday, May 20, 2004

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 20, 2004) - East Tennessee State head coach Tony Skole announced Thursday that McCay Green (Orlando, Fla.), a right-handed pitcher from Lake-Sumter Community College in Leesburg, Fla. has committed to play baseball for the Buccaneers beginning in the 2005 season. After playing two seasons for coach Mike Matulia at Lake-Sumter, the hard-throwing righty established himself as one of the top junior college pitchers in the state of Florida. Following the 2003 season, Green was named to the Florida Junior College Athletic Association All-Star Team, and earned Mid-Florida Junior College Academic All-Conference honors. He was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the Major League Baseball draft after his freshman year at Lake-Sumter. Green also had a prolific athletic career at Orlando Edgewater High School. He was named all-county and team Most Valuable Player in each of his final two seasons and was team captain in his senior year. Following his senior season, Green was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the Major League Baseball draft. Also during his senior year, McCay was quarterback and captain of the Edgewater football team that won 11 straight games and finished the season ranked fourth in the state. "We are extremely excited that McCay Green has decided to join our baseball family at East Tennessee State," said Skole. "McCay will be a tremendous asset to our athletic department and campus community. McCay is a talented athlete and fierce competitor. He has the ability to be one of our top guys for next year. His addition instantly makes us better." McCay and current Buccaneer outfielder Richie Billings (Leesburg, Fla.) were teammates last season at Lake-Sumter. Green joins shortstop Chuck Hargis (Powell, Tenn.), pitcher Robbie Campbell (Lothian, Md.) and catcher Bubba Herbold (Knoxville, Tenn.) in ETSU's 2005 recruiting class.
