CHARLESTON, S.C. (May, 26, 2004) - First Team All-Conference pitcher Jonathan Ellis went the distance for No. 3 seed The Citadel, leading the Bulldogs to a 6-2 victory over No. 6 seed East Tennessee State in the fourth game of the 2004 Southern Conference Baseball Tournament sponsored by the Virginia-Carolina Peanut Growers and the National Peanut Board. The Bulldogs (34-25) advance to face seventh-seeded Davidson at 7 p.m. Friday, while ETSU (28-29) will face No. 2 Georgia Southern in a 1 p.m. elimination game. Matt Covington and Jon Aughey provided the bulk of the offense for The Citadel. Both tallied two hits and two RBI. The game's first run came in the bottom of the first inning when Bulldog leadoff hitter Covington reached on an error and eventually came around to score on Josh Stackley's single to centerfield. In the third inning, Stackley led off with a single and advanced to second on a pass ball. After advancing to third on a fielder's choice, Stackley scored on Aughey's single. The Bulldogs scored another single run in the fifth inning with Aughey scoring on Mark Egleton's single, giving The Citadel a 3-0 lead. The Citadel's final two runs came in the seventh inning. Will Coker doubled and Matt Matulia walked, putting runners on first and second with one out. Covington then drilled a two-run triple to right center, scoring both runners and giving The Citadel a solid 5-0 lead. The Buccaneers attempted a comeback in the eighth. With the bases loaded and two outs, sophomore second baseman Josiah Glafenhein (Knoxville, Tenn.) blooped a single just over the head of Matulia's at shortstop, plating junior catcher Caleb Moore (Knoxville, Tenn.) and senior shortstop Andy Howdeshell (Maryville, Tenn.) and making the score 5-2. However, Ellis got out of the jam by forcing sophomore third baseman Greg Roberts (Douglas, Ga.) to pop up to first base. Aughey gave the Bulldogs an insurance run with a solo homer to left in the eighth, making the score 6-2 and accounting for the final margin. Ellis tossed his seventh complete game of the season and improved his record to 10-3. He scattered 10 hits, allowing two runs (none earned) while walking one and striking out nine. Buccaneer sophomore starter Jeremy Hall (Gray, Tenn.) took the loss (9-8) for the Bucs, going the first five innings and allowing three runs (two earned). He walked four while striking out four. Glafenhein led the Bucs at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs. Moore extended his team-best hitting streak to 20 games with a single in the top of the eighth.
