JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (June 4, 2004) - East Tennessee State junior catcher Caleb Moore (Knoxville, Tenn.), the Southern Conference Player of the Year, was named to the Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I All-American Second Team by the staff of Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Friday morning. Moore and South Carolina's Landon Powell were the second-team catchers while Cal State-Fullerton's Kurt Suzuki was the first-team selection. Moore put together one of the best seasons in ETSU history in 2004, shattering the school record and currently leading all NCAA Division I players with a .455 batting average. He also leads the nation in doubles, breaking the ETSU and SoCon record by hitting 31 this season (.60 per game). In addition, Caleb led the Bucs this season with 59 runs scored, a .752 slugging percentage and a .529 on-base percentage. He ended the season on a 21-game hitting streak. He also served as the Buccaneer closer this season, posting a 2-0 record with six saves and a 3.60 ERA. Moore was dominant in his final 11 appearances of the season, yielding just a 1.35 ERA. Caleb led the Bucs to a 28-30 record this season, 15-15 in SoCon play. The Bucs improved by 13 overall victories and six conference wins over the 2003 season. Following the regular season, Moore earned first-team all-conference from SoCon coaches and media, and was named Player of the Year by both groups. "This is a great honor for Caleb and East Tennessee State University," commented Buccaneer head coach Tony Skole. "I am extremely proud of the year that he had and I am also proud of the way that he conducted himself through the course of the season. I think it is an amazing accomplishment that in the view of the college baseball world, there is only one catcher that had a better year than Caleb." Moore is eligible for the upcoming Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft that begins at 1 p.m. on Monday, June 7. "It is going to be an interesting day on Monday for Caleb and for some of our other players to see if they will get to play professionally," said Skole. "Every year I have been in coaching, I have had a player drafted. It is very exciting to see our players have an opportunity to play at the next level. We will keep our fingers crossed." Moore was one of three SoCon Players to earn All-American accolades from Collegiate Baseball, as Ryan Johnson of College of Charleston and Chip Cannon of The Citadel both earned third-team honors.
