Lady Bucs currently tied for fifth at SoCon Women's Golf Championships
Friday, April 23, 2004 GREENSBORO, N.C. (April 23, 2004) -- Nine-time team champion Furman recorded an opening round 297 to take a seven shot lead over defending champion Western Carolina after the first day of play at the 2004 Southern Conference Women?s Golf Championships, contested at the historic par 71- 6,162 yard Starmount Country Club. The East Tennessee State University Lady Bucs are currently tied for fifth, with sophomore Ashley Barton (Seffner, Fla.) leading the way individually and tied for seventh with a first-round 77. The host institution, UNC Greensboro, is third at 315, followed by College of Charleston at 319. Elon joined ETSU in fifth. Sarah Johnston of Furman tops the individual leaderboard after 18 holes by firing an even-par 71. Johnston holds a two shot lead over Sammy Sue Wilson of Elon and fellow Lady Paladin Jenny Suh. 2003 SoCon Tournament medalist Brandy Anderson (Western Carolina) and Theresa Paik Furman) are tied for fourth at three-over-par 74. Appalachian State (340) stands in sixth place after day one, while The Citadel (341) and Wofford (346) close out the leaderboard.
