Davies fires 68, makes charge to 9th at Puerto Rico Classic
Monday, February 23, 2004 RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico (Feb. 23, 2004) - Freshman Rhys Davies (Bridgend, Wales) fired a sterling 4-under 68 in the second round of the Puerto Rico Classic Monday at the Rio Mar Country Club River Course. With that effort, Davies currently stands tied for ninth at 3-under (73-68=141) and helped the Bucs rise from 15th to 12th in the team standings.On the team leaderboard, Oklahoma (283-280=563 -13) holds a three-stroke edge over second-place Florida (289-277=586 -10), while the Bucs (304-289=593 +17) improved by 15 strokes over the first round score and are 30-strokes back of the top spot. On the individual leaderboard, Clemson's Matt Hendrix has the top spot by two strokes after firing a 67 on Monday. He is six-under for the event. Hendrix is two strokes better than his teammate Jack Ferguson and Oklahoma's tandem of Anthony Kim and Carlos Del Moral. Along with Davies, the Bucs got improved efforts from all four of the team's other players on Tuesday. Sophomore Andrew Paduch (Johnson City) fired a 1-over 73 and finished tied for 47th, and junior Cennydd Mills (Cardiff, Wales) posted a 1-over 73 and ended the day tied for 52nd. In addition, freshman Stephen Arnold (Langhorne, Penn.) ended at 4-over 76 and tied for 68th, while sophomore Noel Kavanagh (Westport, Ireland) finished at 3-over 75 and tied for 74th after two rounds. The final round of the Puerto Rico Classic will be played Tuesday. See accompanying score sheets for complete results.
