GREENVILLE, S.C. (July 29, 2003) - East Tennessee State's football team was picked to finish as high as seventh in the Southern Conference, when the league's coaches and media members voted Monday on their respective preseason polls at the annual SoCon football rouser in Greenville, S.C. ETSU, which finished with an overall record of 4-8 last season, was selected to finish seventh by the media members who cover Southern Conference football, while the league's coaches picked the Buccaneers to place eighth in the 2003 SoCon standings ahead of conference newcomer Elon. "We had a season last year that we are not used to," said ETSU head coach Paul Hamilton. "We re-committed ourselves in December and we are ready to go to work this season." Of the 33 media members who participated in the voting, 30 selected Georgia Southern to win the conference championship. The Eagles, who have won or shared six straight Southern Conference football titles, also garnered all of the eight possible first place votes from the coaching contingent. Coaches vote for eight teams and do not include their own team in the predicted order of finish. The Bucs will open their 2003 schedule on Aug. 28 at Eastern Michigan. ETSU's first home game will be on Thursday, Sept. 4, when the Bucs host Concord College at 7 p.m. 2003 SoCon Media Football Poll 1. Georgia Southern (30) 293 2. Furman (2) 250 3.
