Thursday, August 15, 2002

Spartanburg, S.C. (August 15, 2002) - Eighty-seven student-athletes at East Tennessee State University have been named to the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll for the 2001-02 year. Highlighting the list were Lena Summers (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Scott Carter (Knoxville, Tenn.), who achieved a 4.0 grade point average while competing in women's soccer and football, respectively. "We are extremely proud of our student-athletes who continue to be successful both in the classroom and on the playing field," said ETSU Director of Athletics Todd Stansbury. "I think the fact that we have such a high percentage of our student-athletes achieving a 3.0 (GPA) or better is a tribute to their hard work, their coaches and to East Tennessee State." Football led all men's sports with 16 players named to honor roll, while women's soccer and women's track and field boasted 11 members each. The sports management program had the most student-athletes on the list with 11, followed by business (8) and pre-med (6). The honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports at member institutions and posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher while passing at least 24 hours in two semesters of classes or its equivalent for other academic calendars. Collectively, the Southern Conference honored 1,439 student-athletes for their hard work in the classroom, surpassing the previous high of 1,360 in 2000-01. The complete honor roll listing is available on the official conference website at www.SoConSports.com under the Academic Honor Roll section.
