JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (December 20, 2002) - USA Today recognized East Tennessee State University's student-athletes for their performance in the classroom in the second annual USA Today/NCAA Academic Achievement Awards. ETSU was among the top-10 schools in the I-AA/I-AAA division for "percentage-point improvement" for the current graduation report. The Buccaneers recorded a 24 percent increase in the graduation of student-athletes from the previous year. ETSU student-athletes have a 24 percent higher rate of graduation than that of the student body. The athletic department also celebrated one of its largest graduating classes ever last Saturday as 28 student-athletes received their degrees. "I am extremely proud of our student-athletes who through hard work and dedication earned their ETSU degrees in record numbers," said ETSU Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Todd Stansbury. "This is a tribute to parents, coaches and the academic support staff." The Buccaneer men's tennis program finished the fall semester with an average grade point average of 3.9. Head football coach Paul Hamilton's first recruiting class yielded an 83 percent graduation rate as recognized by the College Football Association. "We continue to build on success by evidence of our men's tennis team and the 83 percent graduation rate for the football team," Stansbury said.
