ETSU Cross Country Men Place Fourth, Women Place Fifth In Catamount Classic

Cullowhee, N.C. (September 7, 2002) - The East Tennessee State University men's and women's cross country teams opened up the 2002 season finishing fourth and fifth in the Western Carolina Catamount Classic on Saturday. The men's cross country team was led by sophomore and 2001 Southern Conference freshman of the year Brad Yewer (Newbury, England) who finished the meet in fourth place with a time of 15:24. ETSU's David Haefner (Hamburg, NY) broke the top ten finishing in seventh with a time of 15:32, while James Grufferty (Glanmire, Ireland) finished 12th with a time of 15:51. "Brad ran well with a good solid performance and David ran a minute faster than last year's time," said ETSU assistant Michelle Byrne. On the women's side, the Buccaneers were led by junior Emily Cheney (Maryville, Tenn) who finished eighth with a time of 14:11. Freshman Katie Marshall (Metuchen, NJ) finished 25th with a time of 14:51 while freshman Christina Ward (Candler,N.C.) finished 30th with the time of 14:57. "Emily ran real well, it was a solid effort to open up the season," said Byrne.
