Johnson City, Tenn. (October 13, 2002) - Freshman Erin Ashton (New Bern, N.C.) broke the school record for points in a season as ETSU rolled to a 7-1 Southern Conference victory over The Citadel Sunday afternoon. Ashton, who previously broke the school record for goals in a season, had one goal and three assists to extend her point total to 25, breaking Kristin Redfern's record of 20 in 2001. The Buccaneer's scored their first goal of the day at the 12:29 mark as a cross from Ashton was deflected by Andrea Brown (High Point, N.C.) and knocked in by freshman Lauren Kulish (Bowie, Md.) to give ETSU the 1-0 lead. Brown later scored her first of two goals for the day at the 16:31 mark when she received a cross from Ashton that found the back of the net. The Bulldogs only goal of the day came in the 20th minute of play as Lauren Merchant fired a shot into the top left corner of the net. Brown would close out the period scoring her second goal of the day off of an Elizabeth Smith (Arden, N.C.) cross to push the Buccaneer lead to 3-1. In the second period the Buccaneers capitalized off of a shot by Smith that hit the top post and was knocked in by Ashton at the 61:35 mark. Senior Lena Summers (Johnson City, Tenn.) later received a gift as a long cross found the back corner of the net in the 65th minute to put the Buccaneers up 5-1. Freshman Catherine Olsen (Thurmont, Md.) scored the first goal of her career as a Brown shot hit the top post and Olsen knocked it in. The final Buccaneer goal came in the 84th minute as a cross from Ashton was headed in by Smith to finalize the score at 7-1. "This weekend has given us confidence that we can score in the attacking third," said Buccaneer head coach Heather Henson. "This sets us in the right direction for our final four conference games." Brown ended the day with two goals and two assists; keeper Heather Sanden (Manassas, Va.) had four saves as ETSU out-shot the Bulldogs 25-8. With the win ETSU moves to 4-6-1, 2-3-1 in Southern Conference play. The Citadel falls to 4-8-1, 0-7 in conference play. The Buccaneers will return to action Friday October 18, against conference foe Western Carolina.
