JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 2, 2003) - East Tennessee State University's Emily Chaney was named the Southern Conference Athlete of the Week, Tuesday, for her performance at last weekends 2003 Adidas Raleigh Relays, hosted by N.C. State. The junior from Maryville, Tenn. finished second in her heat and sixth overall in the women's 3000-meter steeplechase. Chaney's time of 11:14.71 was a lifetime best and broke her own school record. Her time places her atop this week's Southern Conference outdoor rankings by more than 32 seconds. "We are really proud of Emily", said Buccaneer head coach Dave Walker. "She has worked extremely hard and has improved each year, it is nice to see her get the recognition." Chaney and the Buccaneer track and field teams will return to action this Friday as they travel to Liberty University for the Liberty Open Invitational.
