LYNCHBURG, Va. (April 5, 2003) - East Tennessee State University's men's and women's track teams turned in their best overall performance of the season Saturday at the Liberty Invitational. Four Buccaneer athletes placed first to highlight the weekend with the men's team placing second and the women's team placing fourth overall. On the men's side, Buccaneer junior David Haefner (Hamburg, N.Y.) placed first in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:57.25, while teammate Brad Yewer (Newbury, England) finished first in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.52. Collier won the women's 800-meter dash with a time of 2:16.39 and Simmons won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:04.58. In the men's 5000-meter race, Buccaneer freshman Peter Dalton (Dublin, Ireland) placed second, finishing the race in 15:33.90. Chantelle Vernon (Markham, Ontario) turned in two strong performances in the women's 100 and 200-meter dashes, placing second in both. David Cabbler (Roanoke, Va.) placed second in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.37. "This was a great weekend for us," Buccaneer assistant coach Michelle Byrne said. "It was the best all-around performance we have had from both our men's and women's teams all season long." The Buccaneers will travel to Knoxville on April 11-12 for the Sea Ray Relays hosted by the University of Tennessee. The relays will be ETSU's final meet before heading into the Southern Conference Outdoor Championships on April 18-19 in Boone, N.C.
