Johnson City, Tenn. (October 4, 2002) - After losing a tough non-conference match at homeTuesday, East Tennessee State's volleyball team responded in a big way by sweeping Wofford on Friday night in Brooks Gym, 3-0. The Lady Bucs captured the first game 30-20 then rallied back with two come-from-behind victories in games two and three, 30-28 and 30-27, to win the match. Nicole Ryan (Etiwanda, Calif.) led the team with 13 kills. Kristi Robinson (Knoxville, Tenn.) tallied 43 assists in the three-game match, while Karen Freeburg (New Castle, Ind.) led the defensive effort with 10 digs. As a team East Tennessee State hit .327 compared to the Lady Terriers .231. The Buccaneers converted on many of their attacking attempts thanks in large part to the efforts of Sara Scandiffio (Purcellville, Va.) and Kate Steidle (Waynesboro, Va.). Steidle garnered eight kills on 15 attempts for an attacking percentage of .467, while Scandiffio converted 11 of 17 attempts and only one error for a percentage of .588. "I was really pleased with how well Sara Scandiffio played tonight, along with Kate Steidle," said ETSU head coach Deane Webb. "Kristi Robinson also did a nice job at setter of spreading the ball around and making sure we had a very balanced offense." Katie Sobczyk who had 12 kills and Molly Bushong who dished out 34 assists led the Wofford offense. Defensively, Katie Laser and Lindsay Lyman finished the match with 10 and 12 digs, respectively. East Tennessee State now has some momentum heading a pivotal Southern Conference match-up at home versus Furman on Saturday, Oct. 5. The Lady Bucs improved their overall record to 5-9 and evened their mark in the SoCon to 3-3. ETSU could find itself in the mix for third place come next week if the Buccaneers can pull off a victory over the Paladins (10-8, 5-1 SoCon). The match is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. in Brooks Gym.
