East Tennessee State women's tennis sweeps two matches

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (February 15, 2003) - The East Tennessee State women's tennis team shutout Carson-Newman and North Greenville, 7-0, Saturday from Memorial Center in Johnson City, Tenn. In the morning match, the Bucs (5-4) dominated Carson-Newman, winning every set. At No. 1 doubles, juniors Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.) and Tatiana Arriaran (Cochabamba, Colombia) defeated Natalie Tatum and Danielle Wilson of the Eagles, 8-2. At No. 2 doubles, freshman Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) and Aimee Villavicencio (Lexington, Ky.) defeated C-N's Melissa Coulter and Kristi Kirkland, 8-3. Freshman Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.) and junior Courtney McInnis (Waterboro, Me.) won 8-4 at No. 3 doubles over Carson-Newman's Olga Petrovic and Erika Bellettini, 8-4. In singles matches, Ziolkowska defeated C-N's Wilson, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1. At. No. 2, Irey won over Tatum, 6-0, 6-2. McInnis won over Belletini at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 4, Arriaran defeated Kirkland, 6-0, 6-0. Aldea defeated Coulter, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 5 singles. In the final singles match, Villavicencio won over Christian, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 6 singles. The Buccaneers turned in another great performance against North Greenville in Saturday afternoon's match, again winning every set. Irey and sophomore Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) defeated Marinni and Mitchell of North Greenville, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Villavicencio and Ziolkowska defeated the Crusader duo of Macias and Salazar, 8-4. In the final doubles match, Aldea and McInnis won over Burford and Muminova, 8-0. ETSU's momentum did not slow during singles play, as Ziolkowska defeated Marinni at No. 1, 6-2, 6-2. At No. 2 singles, Halim won over Macias, 6-3, 6-2. Irey defeated Mitchell, 6-2, ret., at No. 3 singles. At No. 4 singles, McInnis defeated Salazar, 6-1, 6-1. Arriaran took care of Burford at No. 5 singles, 6-0, 6-0. And in the final match of the day, Aldea defeated Muminova, 6-0, 6-1. "We had a good performance today," said ETSU head coach Steve Brooks following the matches. "It is good to be above .500, and we are going to try to keep it that way. Everyone played very well for the home opener." ETSU returns to action on Feb. 28 at Eastern Kentucky at 3 p.m. The Buccaneers will then face Morehead State at 7 p.m. that evening.
