No. 62 Furman blanks Buccaneers, 7-0, in women's tennis Southern Conference opener

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (March 12, 2003) - The No. 62-ranked Furman Paladins defeated the East Tennessee State University women's tennis team 7-0 Wednesday afternoon in the two teams Southern Conference opener. In doubles action, Furman's Mary Kovarik and Natalie The defeated ETSU's Sylwia Ziolkowska (Warsaw, Poland) and Aimee Villavicencio (Lexington, Ky.), 8-0. Furman picked up two more victories to earn the doubles point from the tandems of Caroline Bentley and Shannon Moore and Mary Neill Hagood and partner Krista Thomson. Bentley and Moore defeated ETSU's Gemma Halim (Jakarta, Indonesia) and Jessica Irey (Clewiston, Fla.), 8-2. Hagood and Thomson defeated Jewel Aldea (Charleston, S.C.) and Tatianna Arriaran (Cochabamba, Bolivia), 8-3. At number one singles, Kovarik defeated Ziolkowska, 6-3, 6-2. Hagood defeated Halim, 7-6, 6-3 at number two singles, while The defeated Irey 6-3, 6-1 at the number three spot. Aldea took Bentley to three sets winning the first, but dropping the final two, 6-1, 0-6, 6-3, at number four singles. Moore defeated Buccaneer junior Courtney McInnis (Waterboro, Maine) 6-3, 6-1 at the five spot, and Furman's Shellie Cochran defeated Arriaran, 6-2, 6-0. "I'm disappointed with our ability to control our emotions today," Buccaneer head coach Steve Brooks said. "Furman is definitely the team to beat in the SoCon this season." With the loss, the Buccaneers fall to 8-6, 0-1 SoCon, while Furman moves to 5-6, 1-0 in conference play. ETSU will return to action March 15 as they travel to UNC Charlotte. The match is set to begin at noon. "We have 13 more matches to go over the next five weeks," said Brooks. "Hopefully we can become more resilient to overcoming errors and bad breaks."
